Void Fill

Quick answer

Paper, loose fill and air cushions to fill empty space.

Void fill stops products moving inside the box, reducing damage and returns. We supply kraft void-fill paper for hand or machine dispensing, biodegradable loose fill, and inflatable air cushions. Choosing the right void fill lets you use a smaller box, cut packaging weight and protect your goods in transit.

Best for

  • Stopping product movement in the box
  • Right-sizing to a smaller carton
  • Plastic-free protection (paper/starch)
  • High-throughput despatch benches

Common sizes & specs

A quick reference — exact spec is on each product and its spec sheet.

Void Fill common specs
Kraft paper Hand-scrunch or machine, recyclable
Loose fill Starch-based, compostable
Air cushions Low material per parcel (needs inflator)
Rule of thumb Fill any gap larger than ~3cm

What to check before ordering

  • Right-size the box first to cut how much you use
  • Paper vs loose fill vs air by product and eco goals
  • Whether you need a dispenser stand or inflator
  • The recyclable/compostable disposal route

Buying void fill in volume?

Void fill choice affects both protection and pack speed. For volume, kraft on a dispenser or an air-cushion system pays back — ask us to spec a setup and quote consumables.

Stocked, or sourced to order

We hold the fast-moving lines and source the rest through our UK supplier network — so you get one honest point of contact whether an item is on the shelf or made to order. We don't claim stock or delivery speed we can't meet.

How our quote & sourcing works

Specs, explained

Void fill(Packing filler, Box filler, Dunnage)
Material used to fill empty space in a box so contents cannot move in transit. Common types include paper, air pillows, bubble wrap and loose fill. More
Kraft paper(Brown paper, Kraft wrapping paper)
A strong, tear-resistant paper made by the kraft pulping process, usually brown. It is widely used for wrapping, void fill, mailers and paper tape. More
gsm (grams per square metre)(Grammage, g/m2, Paper weight)
The weight of paper or board expressed as grams per square metre. Higher gsm generally means a thicker, stiffer, more durable material. More

Bubble wrap vs paper void fill

Both protect goods in transit, but they do different jobs — one cushions the product, one fills the gaps.

Bubble wrap

Wraps and cushions the product surface.

Best for: Fragile items needing impact protection

  • Absorbs shocks around glass, ceramics, electronics
  • Small bubble for surfaces, large bubble for heavy items
  • Recyclable at soft-plastic points (or paper bubble)
  • Doesn't stop movement inside an oversized box

Paper void fill

Fills empty space so contents can't shift.

Best for: Stopping movement in the box

  • Kerbside recyclable kraft paper
  • Fast to scrunch and pack by hand or machine
  • Right-size the box first to use less
  • Less direct cushioning than bubble on its own

Void Fill — FAQs

What is the most eco-friendly void fill?
Kraft void-fill paper and starch-based loose fill are both widely recyclable or compostable, making them popular plastic-free choices. Air cushions use less material overall but are polyethylene — recyclable at soft-plastic points.
How much void fill do I need per parcel?
As a rule of thumb, fill any gap larger than 3cm so the product can't shift. Right-sizing your box first reduces how much void fill you use per parcel.
Do air cushion machines come with the film?
Air cushion film is sold separately from the inflator. We can advise on machine and film pairings and source equipment on request — ask us via Request Bulk Quote.
