Food Packaging Guide: Food-Safe, Compostable & Labelling

Isometric café scene with kraft compostable food containers

Food packaging has to do more than look good: it must be safe for food contact, hold up to hot or cold contents, and increasingly meet customer expectations on recyclability. This guide covers what to look for and the questions worth asking before you commit to a line.

Because food-contact compliance matters, we can provide specification and certification sheets on request for specific products.

Food-safe packaging basics

Any packaging in direct contact with food must be manufactured for food contact and meet UK/EU food-contact requirements. Products listed under our Food Packaging category are made for this purpose.

  • Match the packaging to the food temperature — hot food needs grease-resistant, heat-tolerant boxes and cups.
  • Consider moisture and grease: kraft boxes for dry/hot food, lined or coated options for wetter dishes.
  • Ask for a spec sheet if you need documented food-contact compliance for due diligence.

Takeaway containers and cups

  • Kraft food boxes suit burgers, wraps, noodles and sides; they fold flat for storage and stack when filled.
  • Hot cups need a suitable lining (e.g. PLA) for hot drinks; lids are usually sold separately.
  • Cold cups and containers differ from hot — check the product is rated for your use.

Compostable vs recyclable — honest claims

"Compostable" and "recyclable" aren't interchangeable, and how a product is disposed of matters as much as the material.

  • Industrially compostable items need commercial composting, not a home compost heap or general recycling.
  • Home-compostable is a stricter standard — only claim it where the product is certified for it.
  • Recyclable depends on local facilities and whether the item is contaminated with food. Be accurate on your own packaging claims.

Labelling

Clear labels help customers dispose of packaging correctly and support allergen and product information where you need it. We supply blank and pre-printed labels, and printed food packaging can carry disposal guidance and branding.

Requesting spec sheets and larger runs

For compliance, tenders or larger orders, request the specification and certification sheet for a specific line. Branded and higher-volume food packaging is sourced to order — send your requirements for a quote and lead time.

Common questions

Is your food packaging food-safe?
Products in our Food Packaging category are manufactured for direct food contact and meet UK/EU food-contact requirements. Specification and certification sheets are available on request for a specific line.
What's the difference between compostable and recyclable?
Compostable packaging breaks down in a composting environment (often industrial, not home), while recyclable packaging can be reprocessed where facilities exist and it isn't contaminated with food. They require different disposal, so claims should be specific and accurate.
Can I get food packaging printed with my branding?
Yes. Printed cups, boxes and bags are sourced made-to-order through our supplier network, with minimum order quantities. Request a quote with your artwork and volumes.
