Kraft paper

Definition

A strong, tear-resistant paper made by the kraft pulping process, usually brown. It is widely used for wrapping, void fill, mailers and paper tape.

Also known as: Brown paper, Kraft wrapping paper

Kraft paper is named after the kraft (German for strength) pulping process, which preserves long wood fibres to produce a notably tough, tear-resistant paper. Its natural form is brown, though it is also bleached white or dyed. The same base material appears in wrapping paper, void fill, paper mailers, carrier bags and gummed tape.

In packaging it is valued as a plastic-free, recyclable alternative to films and foams. As void fill it is crumpled or fan-folded to cushion and fill space; as wrapping it protects surfaces; and as a mailer or bag material it gives a clean, printable, kerbside-recyclable finish.

Paper weight is measured in gsm, and heavier kraft resists punctures and tearing better. Because it is fibre-based it is widely accepted in household paper recycling, but any plastic windows, laminates or heavy tape can complicate that, so keep constructions as pure paper where possible.

What to check

  • Choose a gsm suited to the job: lighter for void fill, heavier for wrapping.
  • Confirm it is recyclable kerbside and free of plastic lamination.
  • Check recycled content if a lower-impact spec matters to you.
  • For protection, compare paper void fill against bubble for fragile goods.
  • Match roll or sheet format to your packing bench and dispensers.

Kraft paper — FAQs

Is kraft paper recyclable?
Yes, plain kraft paper is fibre-based and widely recycled at kerbside. Keep it free of plastic laminates, windows or heavy plastic tape so it stays in the paper recycling stream.
