Double-wall cardboard

Definition

Corrugated board with two fluted layers and three liners, giving extra strength and cushioning. It is used for heavy, fragile or stacked shipments and moving boxes.

Also known as: Double wall board, Twin-wall corrugated

Double-wall cardboard is built from two separate fluted layers glued between three flat liners, creating a five-ply structure. The two flutes work together to resist crushing and absorb impact, which is why double-wall boxes handle far heavier and more demanding loads than single-wall.

It is the standard for house moving boxes, heavier e-commerce shipments, and any goods that will be stacked on pallets where box crush strength matters. The combined flutes also improve stacking strength, so lower boxes hold their shape under the weight of the ones above.

The trade-off is higher material cost, more weight and a slightly bulkier wall, so it is overkill for light retail items where single-wall does the job. Choose double-wall when the contents are dense, sharp, fragile or valuable enough to justify the extra protection.

What to check

  • Confirm the box weight rating covers your heaviest packed contents.
  • Check the ECT or bursting strength if boxes will be palletised and stacked.
  • For house moves, look for double-wall on anything heavy like books.
  • Balance protection against the extra cost and shipping weight it adds.
  • Verify the board is widely recyclable kerbside for your customers.

Double-wall cardboard — FAQs

Is double-wall cardboard worth the extra cost?
It is worth it when you ship heavy, dense or fragile goods, or stack boxes on pallets, because the two flutes resist crushing and improve stacking strength. For light retail items, single-wall is usually more cost-effective.
